Data access - Finnish Meteorological Institute (2023)

The download service is a way to use the Finnish Meteorological Institute's open data for your applications. The INSPIRE directive guidelines offer some technological options to implement a download service.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute has chosen to provide the data using the OGCWebressourcendienst (WFS)Interface. WFS is a generic interface standard for providing access to geospatial objects or objects with a specific type of location or geospatial area coverage. These objects can contain any information and the internal structure of the objects is not restricted by the specification. A WFS service is like a database of generic objects with a standardized query language. These spatial objects are called "features".

WFS returns XML files

Typically, WFS services return the requested data encoded as the called XML languageGeographic Markup Language (GML), another OGC and ISO standard. The service must be able to describe the structure of each of the provided resource types in the XML schema language (theDescreverFeatureTypeOperation). This operation can be used to get the expected structure information for the data responses from the WFS service before the actual operation is performedGetFeatureData recovery request.

Essential WFS operations

The latest version of the WFS standard is 2.0, which is also the version required by the technical guidelines of the INSPIRE directive. Consequently, the WFS service of the Finnish Meteorological Institute also only implements this version of the WFS specification.

ÖWFS 2.0-Standarddefines the following operations for the simple WFS profile:

The standard defines for the Basic WFS profile that it must implement operations defined for Simple WFS and additionally implement the GetFeature operation with the Query action and the following operation:

  • GetPropertyValuereturns only the values ​​of selected properties of the requested resources,

The standard also definesLockFeature,GetFeatureWithLock,transaction,CreateStoredQueryeDropStoredQueryoperations. See the standard for more information on operation.

The Simple WFS profile is the minimum that a server should implement. If the server does not support plain WFS, only plain WFS is supported. The response to the GetCapabilities request describes what operations the server supports and what limitations it has.

Saved queries are identifiers for datasets

The current version of the Finnish Meteorological Institute's open data WFS service makes extensive use of saved queries to allow users to select the resources, areas and times they need as easily as possible. To seethe open data WFS servicefor more detailed information about available saved queries and their query parameters.

The data is returned using standard data templates

The WFS operation that actually returns the data is calledGetFeature. It always returns a collection of resources, usually encoded as an XML document.
