In typical Joel fashion, he doesn't take kindly to it. He manages to take a gun from a soldier and fights his way back to Ellie. He found her in the operating room and demanded she be removed from all medical equipment. When the surgeon threatened Joel with a scalpel, Joel shot him in the head. The nurses did as he asked and Joel walked out of the hospital with Ellie, who was unconscious.
After talking with Marlene, we cut to Joel driving down the highway with Ellie, whose narcotics are starting to wear off. We learn through brief flashbacks that Joel also shot Marlene. Joel lied to Ellie when she asked what happened and why she was wearing a hospital gown. "It turns out there are a lot of people like you who are immune. There are dozens of them," he said. “Doctors couldn't make it work. They had practically stopped looking for a cure. Attackers attacked the hospital; I had trouble getting you out.'
They head back to Tommy's settlement in Jackson, Wyoming, and as Joel and Ellie walk the last five miles, Ellie pauses. She thinks of all the loved ones she's lost to the caterpillar fungus: her first love Riley, Joel's sidekick Tess, and young Sam, Henry's younger brother who was killed in episode five. Then she said to Joel, "Swear to me, everything you said about the fireflies is true." He replied, "I swear." "Okay," she said. Cut to black, it's the end of season one. It's also almost like a scene from a video game.
The video game sequel is set many years after the events of the first episode. but less than an hourthe second part, Joel faces the consequences of his actions. He was killed with a golf club by a character named Abbey. Ellie and his brother Tommy watched.
